Solenoid valve ( water flow control )

October 27th, 2008

I got this solevoid valve in the kaichin 2nd hand shop in sim lim. Probably the best water flow control solution i can find. This solenoid opens up its gate when a 220v power supply passes through it, otherwise it keeps all water behind its gate.

Water pump

Initial test with water pump. This cheap water pump costs about 9 dollars, good price but it wasn’t powerful enough.

gps modules

October 18th, 2008

I made some research online about gps receiver modules and found some really good tutorials and resources about the parallax gps module , to top it up , it has got compass capabilities which i can use for my audio feedbacks.

The arduino tutorial can be found here, http://www.arduino.cc/playground/Tutorials/GPS . There is also a very good section about this component in tom igoe’s “making things talk” where it is used in a few small mini projects.

I ended up buying it from a local company with a “nice” price tag and true enough, it is fairly easy to wire and to make it work on a basic level.

Meeting up with Reuben from Nus

October 18th, 2008

I managed to steal some time from Reuben, the project leader of the Nus Mapping Potential Sea Level Rise in Singapore. He gave me much insight into the possibilities of Sea level rise should it hit singapore and asia, like for example the El nino which i never knew of. He also shared with me much knowledge about geographical means of gathering data for maps and also introduced me to softwares like Microdem and arcgis.

He also provided me with the Digital Elevation Map of Singapore and some of the soft copies of his project work on mapping singapore sea level rise. Thanks Reuben!

design for helmet

October 11th, 2008

This is the artist impression i came up with for the helmet but it’s actually more of a visor partly because of financial reasons. I had wanted to do something like the helmet below, a full circular shaped mini environment within.
